Robeisy Ramirez: I Won That Fight, I Landed Cleaner Punches!

By Francisco Salazar

In a shocking upset, featherweight Adan Gonzalez defeated two-time Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez by unanimous decision at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia.

With the victory, Gonzalez, who resides in Denver, improves to 5-2-2, 2 knockouts.

"When they announced a split decision, I knew I better have won that fight or something would have seriously been wrong," Gonzales said. "I attacked him from the start, and I got the win. You ain’t seen the last of me.”

Ramirez, who defected from the Cuban National team in July of last year, was sought after by several promotional companies before signing a promotional deal with Top Rank earlier this year.

The fight did not start well for Ramirez, who was dropped by Gonzalez with a left hand to the head within the first 30 seconds of the opening bell. Ramirez was not visibly hurt from the punch, and it looked as though he was off-balanced when Gonzalez connected with the punch.

The southpaw Ramirez dictated the pace of the fight in the second round, looking to counter with left uppercuts and crosses to the head of Gonzalez. During an exchange, Gonzalez landed a left-right combination to the head of Ramirez.

Undaunted, Gonzalez let his hands go more in round three, forcing Ramirez to throw more punches. Ramirez did not do himself any favors by establishing an effective jab throughout the fight, allowing Gonzalez to close the distance and connecting to the head and body of Ramirez with hooks to the body.

Both fighters had their moments during the fourth round, but Gonzalez looked confident and was the aggressor duration the round.

One judge scored the bout 38-37 for Ramirez, while the other two judges scored the bout 40-35 and 39-36 for Gonzalez.

“I feel like I won that fight. He may have been throwing more, but I was the one landing the cleaner punches. This is a setback, but trust me, I will be back,” Ramirez said.

[QUOTE=umop-ap!sdn;19982352]"Landed the cleaner punches" this isnt the Olympics rook. Effective agression, ring generalship/control are considdered and rounds are scored on a 10 point system, not points per clean hit like olympic judging. You officially have a loss before you have…

If he thinks winging wide punches with no setup that barely glance his opponent are clean punches then I guess so. He has the sloppiness of an amateur still and Adan as inexperienced as he is looked much better suited…
