Next Saturday night, Miguel Cotto will make the first defense of his WBC middleweight championship against Daniel Geale at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Some fans are critical of Cotto's ongoing run in the middleweight division, because the Puerto Rican superstar has yet to fight an opponent at the contract weight of 160-pounds, which is the middleweight limit.
Cotto's 2014 title winning effort over Sergio Martinez took place at a catch-weight of 159-pounds. Against Geale, the catch-weight is even steeper with the Australian challenger being forced to sink down to 157-pounds.
Cotto's trainer, Freddie Roach, sees nothing with his fighter using catch-weights, because a lot of other boxers are making catch-weight fights as well. Cotto's probable next opponent, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, has fought at a catch-weight of 155-pounds in his last three ring appearances.
Roach's position on the subject is no surprise, because his main superstar fighter - Manny Pacquiao- has used catch-weights in some of his biggest fights - including a catch-weight of 145-pounds against Cotto in 2009.
Eventually, in the future, Roach expects Cotto to face opponents at the full 160 limit.
"Boxing is a different world nowadays. Catch-weights are pretty popular in the world. We're not the only ones doing catch-weights. I'm sure that we'll have an opponent at 160 some day, but the thing is...right now this opponent is a little bigger, so they came in with a catch-weight, but that's what it's all about in boxing. It's part of the new world of boxing," Roach told BoxingScene.com.
