Roach: If Geale Can't Make Weight, We Have Backups!

By Victor Salazar

WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto was looking in top form for his showdown with Daniel Geale happening Saturday in Brooklyn, New York at the Barclays Center. Cotto worked out for the media for about a half hour and what many left with from the workout was the thudding body shots Cotto was hitting his trainer Freddie Roach with on the mitts. Roach says his power is there and ready for Saturday night.

“That body protector doesn’t help that much I need a bigger one,” Roach told “But he’s doing good, the body shot and the mitt shots, the power is there.”

Much has been made during fight week regarding the catch weight of 157 in a bout for the lineal and WBC World Middleweight Title. A catch weight of 157 figures to favor the smaller Cotto and put the natural middleweight Geale at a disadvantage. reported that there was no financial penalty should Geale not honor the catch-weight. But Roach says there is a backup plan should Geale not make weight.

“The thing is he has a contract and it should be honored but in today’s day and age it doesn’t seem like things are honored all the time,” stated the trainer. “Thing was when I was a fighter, we did but things change a little bit. I’m not too sure what he’s going to weigh but if he comes in overweight, we got some guys to back him up. We got replacements believe me, we did cover all our bases.”

Honestly, if the backup thing is serious then it's likely Heiland. He was HBO approved, WBC ranked, willing to do the catch weight, and shares the same manager as Cotto. It also might explain why Heiland/Johnson wasn't on the undercard.
This is pathetic,if he is over 157 they will pull out, basically they are banking on him being drained or no fight
it's a contract, the fuk don't you understand about that? also, if you read, there's another cat lined up,…

Why is everyone shocked at Cotto's behavior. Look who his trainer is, the Master of CW. Hell, he's built his career on catch weights. Instead of training his fighter to avoid taking punishment, he creates an advantage by draining them.…

They might have a backup, but I don´t think they have a WBC approved backup.. so if Geale comes in at 159 and Cotto withdraws, wouldn´t the belt go to Geale (at least strip Cotto of the belt)? WBC doesn´t…

I used to like Cotto until all this catch weight sh1t. I used to feel sorry for him about the Margarito loaded gloves. But now I'm happy it happened to him, he deserved it. Matter of fact I'm going on…
