Trainer Freddie Roach is focused on working the corner of a major fight on May 2nd of next year. Two blockbuster events are being targeted for the lucrative Cinco De Mayo weekend.
Roach trains WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto.
Top Rank, who promote Pacquiao and work closely with Cotto, are working behind the scenes to finalize significant bouts for both boxers. Top Rank's CEO, Bob Arum, is crossing his fingers on reaching an agreement to match his Filipino star against Floyd Mayweather Jr. On the other end, Arum wants to see Cotto defend his title against Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Which fight will become a reality? In the opinion of Roach, Cotto vs. Canelo is more likely to actually happen.
"I think Canelo-Cotto is more likely - it's a big fight out there for both guys. The Puerto Rican-Mexican rivalry in the sport is a great one and I love that fight for Miguel. I really hope that fight comes about. It's definitely the fight I want for him first and then we'll worry about guys like 'Triple G' (Gennady Golovkin) after that," Roach told BoxingScene.com.
