Undefeated 122-pound world champions Carl Frampton (IBF) and Scott Quigg (WBA) are ready for war in Manchester, England, as they faced-off for the long-awaited super bantamweight unification showdown later tonight at Manchester Arena.
The unification between Frampton (21-0, 14 KOs), of Belfast, Ireland, and Quigg (32-0-2, 23 KOs), of Lancashire, United Kingdom will be televised live on SHO EXTREME at 5:30 p.m. ET/PT.
Manchester legend and former champion Ricky Hatton sees a 50-50 fight.
“It’s probably one of the biggest domestic fights in recent years, so it’s brilliant,” Hatton said to UTV. “Obviously I’m a Mancunian, so Scott Quigg is the corner I will be in, but I have so much admiration for Carl Frampton and Barry McGuigan and all the Cyclone Promotions team. Barry McGuigan was a hero of mine and I’ve met Carl Frampton – he’s an absolute gentleman.”
“When you fight at world class level, we’ve all been knocked on our backside; we’ve all been cut; we’ve all be hurt. It’s something you get used to. If I’m brutally honest, I don’t think you’ll find anyone that’ll go: ‘Oh, it’s definitely Carl Frampton …’ or ‘It’s definitely Scott Quigg …’ I think it’s a 50/50 fight,” Hatton said.
Cruiserweight contender Tony Bellew expects a close one as well.
"Neither of these two have fought on such a massive scale like this," Bellew told Sky Sports. "It has the same rivarly and bitterness and the pressure that comes with that is unbelievable, it really is.
"Both Quigg and Frampton are going to have to go through that and they can tell you it's not going to affect them, but believe you me once you leave that dressing room and make that ringwalk, it does affect you. Somewere along the line it comes out - and it will."
"I think we all saw Quigg against Martinez, when he was in trouble in the very first round, but he got through a major, major situation. But in this one he can't afford to have the same sort of first round. And it goes without saying that Frampton can't afford to have the sort of first round he had last time out either. They both had terrible first rounds but they both came through and won, which shows what a 50-50 this is. But the scale of Saturday night is 20 times bigger than anything either of them has faced."
"If it's close I think we will see a rematch. If it goes to the scorecards, definitely. Basically the reason why me and Cleverly had that remach was because there was no other big fighters, with the money, around for us. At super-bantamweight the big name is Rigondeaux and I think they both understand that he's not right for those same reasons."
