Richard Commey Very Confident Ahead of Chaniev Clash

By Chris Glover

Richard Commey is buzzing ahead of his IBF World Lightweight title fight against Russia’s Isa Chaniev on February 2 in Frisco, Texas.

Commey is now deep into camp with trainer Andre Rozier in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn and opened up about how camp life is in a gym that is arguably home to some of the best talent in the USA right now.

The Ghanaian said, “Training is fantastic. I am never out of the gym anyway, but I am really enjoying training alongside the likes of Danny Jacobs, Chris Algieri, Curtis Stevens, Duke Micah, Sadam Ali and many others.

“It’s a dream to train under the guidance of Andre Rozier and his team and I’m very grateful for the opportunity.
The IBF number 1 ranked Lightweight continued, “Working alongside these fighters and under the guidance of an excellent trainer has helped me become a more complete fighter and I will show that on February 2.”

Commey, under the guidance of Michael Amoo-Bediako Snr, has been seen by many as a World Champion in waiting for the last several years, and elaborated on his feelings at finally getting an opportunity in landing the IBF World Lightweight title.

He said, “My manager Michael Amoo-Bediako Snr and promoter Lou DiBella have worked tirelessly to get me this opportunity and I cannot thank them enough.

“Michael has created a great team around me that allows me to be the best fighter I can be and you will see that in Texas on February 2.”

Commey’s opponent for the IBF World Lightweight title will be tough Russian Isa Chaniev, who has looked excellent in his 14 professional contests. Brooklyn based Commey gave his take on what fight fans can expect on February 2.

He said, “Anyone who knows boxing knows I am always in entertaining and explosive fights.

“I am getting better every day with Andre Rozier and the team and I’m confident in putting on the best display of my career and winning the IBF World Lightweight title in devastating fashion.”

I was surprised when Chaniev beat Barroso, but he still lost to Fedor Papazov, so he can't be that good can he? Would be surprised if Commey doesn't win this one, he could arguably still be undefeated
