A buzzing O'Shaquie Foster has promised he will dominate the super featherweight division after his world title shot was confirmed.

Rey Vargas has shifted his goal from unifying the featherweight titles to become a three-division titlist. The WBC Board of Governors unanimously approved a request filed by Vargas, its current featherweight champ, to challenge for the vacant WBC junior lightweight title. The unbeaten two-division title claimant will have to face number-one ranked WBC contender O’Shaquie Foster, with a 30-day negotiation period expected to be ordered in the coming days.

Leo Santa Cruz and Leigh Wood are set to fight this fall. Just not against each other. The two claimants to the WBA featherweight title were instead granted permission to enter separate fights, with each of their belts at stake. As announced by Matchroom Boxing, Wood will defend his secondary WBA featherweight title against streaking contender Mauricio ‘Bronco’ Lara on September 24 in his hometown of Nottingham, England.

Newly crowned WBC featherweight champion Rey Vargas is still hoping to secure a showdown with WBA champion Leo Santa Cruz. Earlier this month, Vargas captured the WBC title with a twelve round decision win over Mark Magsayo.

The World Boxing Association has applied a lot of pressure on their WBA 'super' champion at featherweight, Leo Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz has not made a mandatory defense of the featherweight belt since June of 2018. The Mexican boxer had to make a mandatory defense by June of 2020. The last time Santa Cruz defended that title was back in February of 2019.

Some fighters don’t know how to lose. It doesn’t matter that they look beatable, vulnerable, on the verge…they find ways to win because there is more there than meets the eye. With now-featherweight titlist, there is plenty to meet and please the eye. His height, jab, punch selection, and timing are all things right there to witness. As he survived some rough late rounds against Mark Magsayo on Saturday night, the things below all the skills he’s acquired through hours in the gym under the tutelage of master trainer Nacho Beristain stood out.

SAN ANTONIO – Brandon Figueroa acknowledged after his technical knockout of Carlos Castro on Saturday night that he wants to fight Rey Vargas next.

SAN ANTONIO – Rey Vargas’ goal now that he has won the WBC featherweight title is to add another 126-pound championship to his collection.

Mexico’s Rey Vargas became a two-division world champion Saturday night as he rose from a knockdown and boxed and banged his way to the WBC featherweight world championship against Mark Magsayo by split-decision in a dramatic showdown that headlined live on Showtime from the Alamodome in San Antonio in a Premier Boxing Champions event.
