Late summer can be a hit and miss time for boxing. It’s the time before the fall typically heats up. 2018 is no different with scraps like Garcia-Porter and Alvarez-Golovkin II right around the corner. It doesn’t mean August can’t have its intrigues. Saturday’s lightweight title clash (ESPN, 10:30 PM EST) is a sort of crossroads fight. Challenger Jose Pedraza had a reign at 130 lbs. marked by inactivity, a controversial decision win over Edner Cherry, and a decisive defeat to Gervonta Davis. At 29, he needs a win here to prove he can truly be a force in the titled ranks.
Nothing has come easy for Ray Beltran in his over 19 years as a prizefighter and in his personal life. In fact, what he does in and out of the ring very much mirrors one another. Beltran has faced the top fighters at 135 pounds over the last several years, most often in their hometowns or as an opponent. Meanwhile, Beltran and his management team have been working with immigration lawyers, filling out paperwork and documents to finalize becoming a U.S. citizen.
Former super featherweight champion Jose Pedraza (24-1) has the opportunity to become a two-division champion on Saturday when he faces WBO lightweight kingpin Ray Beltran (35-7-1). The fight takes place at the Gila River Arena just north of Phoenix and will serve as an ESPN main event. WBO super bantamweight titleholder Isaac Dogboe defends his belt against Hidenori Otake in the televised co-feature bout.

More than the WBO lightweight title is on the line when Ray Beltran makes the first defense of that belt against Jose Pedraza from the Gila River Arena in Glendale, California. The winner of the bout is already lined up for a unification with two-time Olympic gold medal winner Vasyl Lomachenko, according to Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, who promotes all three of the involved fighters.
The World Boxing Organization (WBO) announced the officials for two WBO World title bouts to be held this Saturday, August 25th in Arizona. In the main event, WBO Lightweight (135 lbs) World Champion Raymundo Beltrán, from México, will face WBO ranked number two José Pedraza, from Puerto Rico.
