Ray Beltran made weight Friday morning and will move forward with his fight against Richard Commey on Friday night. The 38-year-old Beltran was overweight Thursday for their 12-round, 135-pound championship match, which disqualified him from fighting for Commey’s IBF lightweight title. Beltran paid a $20,000 penalty to Commey for failing to make weight, but he also wasn’t allowed to weigh more than 146½ pounds at the IBF’s second-day weigh-in Friday morning.
Don’t stand and trade with Richard Commey. That’s the advice veteran trainer Freddie Roach hammered home while working with Ray Beltran during his recently completed training camp. The 38-year-old Beltran’s legs aren’t his strong suit, but Roach realizes that the former WBO lightweight champion must take an intelligent approach to facing the hard-hitting Ghanaian if he is to have a chance to pull off an upset in their 12-round, 135-pound title fight Friday night.

By Thomas Gerbasi - Boxing is taken seriously in Bukom. So when Isaac Dogboe lost his WBO junior featherweight title to Emanuel Navarrete last December, the heat was on for Richard Commey to get the job done in his own title fight. For Bukom. For Accra. For Ghana. That’s a lot of pressure for anyone, but Com...
Richard Commey is finishing off camp as he prepares to clash with one of North America’s most exciting fighters of recent years in Ray Beltran on June 28 in Temecula, California. Commey will make the first defense of his world lightweight title he acquired via a second-round demolition of Isa Chaniev this past February in Frisco, Texas.
Something has to give. IBF lightweight world champion Richard Commey is one of the division’s biggest punchers. For his first title defense, he’ll face a rugged ex-champion who hasn’t been knocked out in more than a decade.
