Alejandra Guzman fulfilled her vow to serve as the roadblock in Ramla Ali’s title quest. The former title challenger from Ciudad Obregon, Mexico earned a massive upset win with an eight-round knockout of the iconic Ali. Guzman scored two knockdowns, the latter producing a full ten count at 0:42 of round eight in their DAZN-aired junior featherweight bout Saturday from Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Regis Prograis soaked in the last taste of pre-fight ambiance before he performs on familiar soil. The two-time and reigning WBC junior welterweight titlist was a lean and ready 139 pounds for his long overdue homecoming appearance. The occasion also marks Prograis’ first defense of his second title reign which comes versus Puerto Rico’s Danielito Zorrilla, who was also 139 pounds for their scheduled 12-round DAZN main event Saturday from Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.
NEW YORK – Ramla Ali out-boxed an undefeated fighter Saturday night to move closer toward a 122-pound title shot. The Somalian contender scored a unanimous points victory against Australia’s Avril Mathie in their 10-round IBF junior featherweight elimination match at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater. Judges Tom Carisone, Max De Luca and Kevin Morgan favored Ali’s work by the identical score of 99-91 on the Amanda Serrano-Erika Cruz undercard.
Amanda Serrano has won world titles in seven divisions on her way to becoming one of the biggest stars in women’s boxing. She is expected to fight undisputed champion Katie Taylor at the lightweight limit of 135 pounds for the second time May 20 in Dublin, but Serrano admits that she is most comfortable boxing as a featherweight. The 34-year-old Serrano showed yet again Friday that she can continue to make the 126-pound maximum for her division.
As previously reported by BoxingScene.com, Amanda Serrano will face Erika Cruz in a Puerto Rico vs. Mexican battle for the Undisputed World Featherweight championship and Alycia Baumgardner takes on Elhem Mekhaled for the Undisputed World Super-Featherweight championship at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday February 4, exclusively live worldwide on DAZN.
Badou Jack kept on track in his bid to become a three-weight world champion, as the former super-middleweight and light-heavyweight title-holder snapped the unbeaten record of Connecticut’s Richard Rivera with a ten-round split decision on the Usyk-Joshua bill in Jeddah.
Ramla Ali has been rebuked by human rights organization Amnesty International after she called Saudi Arabia a “very progressive” country.
Oleksandr Usyk put to rest any talk of his coming in significantly heavier for his rematch with Anthony Joshua. The two-division and reigning unified heavyweight champ tipped the scales at a fight-ready 221 ½ pounds, almost identical to his weight for his upset win over Joshua nearly one year ago. Joshua was 244 ½ pounds, four pounds heavier than his weight of 240 pounds their first fight last September as he bids to become a three-time unified heavyweight titlist.
