Joe Gallagher, trainer of WBA bantamweight champion Scott Quigg, says the American fans were laughing at the United States debut of IBF champion Carl Frampton (21-0, 14KOs) on July 18th in Texas. He was dropped twice and had some trouble before making the proper adjustements to win a twelve round unanimous decision over Alejandro Gonzalez.
The two boxers will collide in an IBF/WBA super bantamweight unification on February 27th at Manchester Arena.
“They were all laughing about him struggling with Gonzalez,” said Gallagher to Newsletter.
Quigg said he was very dissapointed with Frampton's victory. He feels Frampton's Barry McGuigan, overhypes his fighter.
"The way Barry bangs the drum about him, everyone was expecting him to go and do a job on Gonzalez. Then there was a bit of ‘what is Barry going on about?,'" Quigg said.
According to Quigg, McGuigan asked Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach to provide his opinion on the upcoming fight. Roach allegedly told McGuigan that Quigg would beat Frampton.
"I think BarryMcGuigan asked for his opinion on who’d win between the two of them and Freddie Roach went, ‘well Scott Quigg," Quigg said.
Quigg feels very confident after blowing out former IBF champion Kiko Martinez in two rounds. Frampton went the twelve round distance with Martinez in their 2014 rematch.
