The ordered rematch between Emmanuel “Manny” Rodriguez and the Filipino Reymart Gaballo for the interim title of the World Boxing Council (WBC) at 118 pounds, has encountered pitfalls.
For this reason, Rodriguez (19-2, 12 KO) chose to take another course while Gaballo solves some visa problems to leave the Philippines and this Saturday he will collide with Gary Antonio Russell (18-0, 12 KO) the interim-bantamweight belt of the World Boxing Association (WBA).
The fight will be held at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
"Manny he wants to fight. He knows that he will be fighting for everything on Saturday against Russell because, by winning, the doors are opened to potential fights against the winner between Joel Casimero and Guillermo Rigondeaux or perhaps against Nonito Donaire,” said Juan Orengo, promoter of Rodriguez, to Carlos Gonzalez.
In fact, Orengo does not rule out a rematch against Japan's Naoya Inoue, who defeated Rodriguez by knockout in two rounds in May 2019.
“It is the one we want and more now that Inoue fights in the United States. Also if Manny wins, he can fight Rigondeaux or Nonito, with whom he had previously spoken, but could not be given because he tested positive for COVID-19. We would love to go with Nonito, it would be spectacular, "said Orengo.
Rodriguez, 29, did training camp for the match against Russell in Mexico.
"He was in Mexico for 10 weeks because there they work harder, they are not distracted, they have zero distractions, " said Orengo. "Manny arrived in Los Angeles on Monday, with enough time to acclimatize after training at high altitude."
Saturday's fight will be part of a Showtime televised card, which features a main event clash between WBO champion John Reil Casimero and Guillermo Rigondeaux.
