Rey Vargas risks a guaranteed title shot as he takes on former super flyweight champ Alexander Munoz. Their 12-round battle takes place Saturday evening at Deportivo Zaragoza in Atizapan de Zaragoza, Mexico.
Both boxers tipped the scales at 121.9 lbs., just under the 122-pound super bantamweight divisional limit for their bout, which headlines Saturday's edition of Sabados de Box on Mexico Televisa.
With a win, Vargas (27-0, 21KOs) - who is trained by the legendary Ignacio 'Nacho' Beristain - will remain the mandatory challenger for the super bantamweight title held by countryman and Promociones del Pueblo stablemate Hugo Ruiz, who has a dangerous date ahead himself with his first title defense coming versus former two-division titlist Hozumi Hasegawa later this month in Japan.

"King has excellent conditions. He is a young man of great stature for his division, and he knows how to take advantage of these conditions in the ring, going undefeated. He is one of a kind and has everything to become world champion," said Don Nacho.

Nacho is also aware that there are always things to correct and with a world title fight looming he is confident that that his student will make the most of his youth and talent.
"In each preparation we work differently depending on the opponent you are going to face. It will be a tough fight, but King has the conditions to be the winner. We have worked very well and we will show that on the night of the fight. He is ready to go for the world title," established Beristain, who has worked with more than 20 Mexican world champions.
Ruiz won the title with a 1st round knockout of Julio Ceja in their rematch this past February in Anaheim, California. Vargas appeared on the undercard, scoring an 8th round stoppage of Christian Esquivel. He has since added a points win over Alexis Bouriema Kabore this past June in his birthtown of Mexico City.
Munoz (38-6, 30KOs) has long ago seen better days since upon a time serving as among the best super flyweights in the world. Still, the 37-year old Venezuelan comes in riding a two-fight win streak, including a 4th round knockout over Guillermo Ortiz this past May in Nicaragua. The well-traveled former champ will appear in his seventh country in the span of his last eight fights.
