For the 6th consecutive year The Floyd Mayweather Jr. Foundation’s Back-2-School Giveaway saw hundreds of families in the Las Vegas community this past Saturday, August 11th, making this the biggest event to date with over 1,000 backpacks filled with supplies and books for students in attendance! The giveaway was held at West Flamingo Park in Las Vegas, and was joined by the Mayweather Promotions’ fighters.
The event was DJ’d by Hot 97.5 FM resident DJ D. Miles who opened the event and entertained the crowd all day. The backpack giveaway area was staffed by volunteers and fighters who included: Ronald “The Thrill” Gavril, Lanell “KO” Bellows, Juan Heraldez, Angelo “El Chinito” Leo, Sanjarbek "War” Rakhmanov, Sharif “The Lion” Bogere, and Lionell Thompson. The event also included: arts & crafts station with coloring pages and canvases to paint, marbling bookmarks by Discovery Children’s Museum, photo booth by 4Evr Foto, and complimentary eye exams courtesy of Eye Care 4 Kids. Papa John’s Pizza, Costco, and Three Square, and BSN Sports provided lunch and beverages.
Students in grades 5-12 who presented their library cards were given a chance to win a brand-new laptop and printer. A total of six participants walked away with new technology to start the school year off on track! All students were also welcomed to participate in a potato sack and hula-hoop race to win a prize pack for their grade level that included extra back-to-school supplies!
“Education plays an important role in being successful. It’s not always easy to stay motivated, but putting your best foot forward is essential to reaching your goals,” says Floyd Mayweather, Director of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. Foundation. “I encourage all parents to stay in the know about their child’s studies and school activities because they play a large role in each student’s success.”
“The continuous growth we’ve experienced in our annual Back-2-School Giveaways signifies the influence and positive impact that our foundation has for the Las Vegas Community,” said Nicole Craig, President of the Floyd Mayweather Jr Foundation. “We look forward to an even greater impact in the years to come!”
The 2018 Back-2-School Giveaway would not have been possible without the collective efforts of our staff, volunteers, fighters, sponsors, and community supporters.
“This was my first time joining the Back-2-School Giveaway,” said MP stable member Angelo Leo. “It was great to experience seeing the kids happy and with a smile on their faces from receiving their backpacks.”
“It’s great to see these young kids who are thinking about the importance of education at a young age,” said MP fighter Sanjarbek Rakhmanov.
“I enjoy seeing Mayweather Promotions bring the communities together for a great cause,” said MP fighter Sharif Bogere. “I see a lot of parents and kids excited to enter the new school year prepared and ready. Education is the key to a successful future.”
“This was a great experience, this year I’ve noticed the growth in attendance and it’s great to see the kids happy to have received the items they need for the new school year,” said Lionell Thompson.
