O2 Arena, London - In a crossroads lightweight battle between two former world champions, Lee Selby (28-2, 9 KOs) won a close twelve round majority decision over Ricky Burns (43-8-1, 16 KOs).
The scores were 115-115, 116-112, 116-113.
At the start, the speed, foot work and movement of Selby was giving Burns a lot of problems. At the end of the fifth, there was a near rumble when Burns hit Selby after the bell - and Selby became enraged and tried to go after Burns. He was held back by the referee.
Burns began to let his hands go more often in the seventh and was coming forward with combinations. He began to rally in the second half, piling up some points as Selby was slowing down from his fast pace early on. Selby began to put together a rally of his own in the tenth round, as he picked things up with a variety of quick punches connecting.
Burns came out firing in the eleventh round, taking the fight to Selby. He continued to force the fight and fire in the twelfth. Selby was fighting back, looking to hold off Burns, who sensed the fight was on the table.
