Madison Square Garden, New York City - For the WBA International welterweight title, Josh Kelly (9-0-1, 6 KOs) and Ray Robinson (24-3-2, 12 KOs) fought to a ten round majority draw. The scores were 96-95 for Kelly, 95-95, 95-95. (photos by Ed Mulholland, Mark Robinson)
Kelly was coming off an April ten round unanimous decision over Przemyslaw Runowski.
And Robinson was returning from a debatable draw against highly rated Egidijus Kavaliauskas from March.
Kelly had the advantage with the cleaner shots in the first, and Robinson was able to land more of the cleaner punches in the second. The third and fourth was close, with Kelly being defensive and landing cleaner, but Robinson at times was throwing more and landing good punches.
They were trading on the inside in the fifth, with Robinson starting to land more. Robinson went after Kelly with an inside attack in the sixth. A cut opened up around the right eye of Robinson, as the Philly fighter was going after Kelly.
Robinson went after Kelly at the start of the seventh and opened up a cut around the left eye of Kelly. Robinson was throwing a lot of punches, before Kelly started to throw punches of his own.
More pressure and punching from Robinson in the eight. Robinson had the much higher workrate with Kelly being defensive but not throwing enough shots. Kelly seemed to have the edge in the ninth with the better landed punches. Both were letting their hands go in the tenth, with Robinson connecting with the better punches this time around.
