Wintrust Arena, Chicago - Daniel Roman (26-2-1, 10 KOs) picked up a tenth round stoppage of Gavin McDonnell (20-2-2, 5 KOs) to retain the WBA super bantamweight title.
Roman had two defenses this year, with a twelve round decision over Ryo Matsumoto in February and then a twelve round decision over an overweight Moises Flores in June.
McDonnell has won four in a row since losing a twelve round majority decision to Rey Vargas in February 2017.
After a close first round, Roman began to get more active in the second - as he began to land solid punches while blocking McDonnell's returns. Roman continued to land better in the third and was also connecting with shots to the body.
They were mixing it up in the fourth, with both having their moments. Roman as landing flush punches in he fifth and busted open the nose of McDonnell. He was also digging hard to McDonnell's body. More damage on McDonnell in the sixth, as his mouth was bleeding and he was tagged with solid shots.
After Roman controlled the seventh, McDonnell began to rally in the eight and ninth.
But Roman came out firing and badly rocked McDonnell in the tenth. After a series of hard shots, McDonnell went down and he was in serious trouble. He made it up and the referee waved things off.
