Earlier today, the World Boxing Council officially belted Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs) in Mexico City. The sanctioning body officially announced him as the middleweight champion before the local press and handed him a brand new green and gold belt
Canelo captured the world title in November with a twelve round unanimous decision over Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The event in Mexico City also celebrated Canelo's run in 2015, after beating James Kirkland in May with a brutal knockout, and then capture his second divisional world title a few months later.

"We want to celebrate the achievements of one of the best Mexicans in the ring today in boxing," said Mauricio Sulaiman, President of WBC.

Canelo has been on vacation and soon will begin training for his next fight to be held in May; Willie Monroe Jr. and Gabriel Rosado have been mentioned as potential opponents.

Should Canelo come out unfazed in May, he will go against WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight world champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin in September. Golovkin, who also holds the WBC-interim championship, is going to defend his belts in April. The WBC ordered both fighters to face each other by the end of the year. If either boxer is unable to go forward, he will be stripped of his WBC belt.
