Arum, Marquez To Meet on Wednesday, Talk Pacquiao 5

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum will have dinner with Juan Manuel Marquez on Wednesday to discuss a planned fifth fight against Manny Pacquiao sometime in September. Arum told BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard “we have to figure what the deal is.” When reminded that Marquez who scored a crushing 6th round knockout over Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas last December 8 had said he believes there was no need to fight Pacquiao for a fifth time and would prefer facing Brando “Bam Bam” Rios, Arum said “he is not negotiating with me. He is negotiating with Manny (Pacquiao).”

BoxingScene.com reported earlier that Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum has scheduled a Wednesday meeting with Juan Manuel Marquez to discuss a fifth fight with Manny Pacquiao. Last week, Marquez's trainer Nacho Beristain explained that he doesn't see a reason for a fifth fight with Pacquiao, and similar comments have been made by Juan Manuel in several interviews. Even though there have been four battles, with the last one being won by Marquez with a sixth round knockout, Nacho says there is still a lot of interest in a fifth meeting. While he doesn't like the idea of a fifth fight, he will leave the final decision in the hands of Juan Manuel.

Sulaiman To Marquez: Forget Pacquiao, Retire From Boxing

Jose Sulaiman, President of the World Boxing Council, has advised Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1, 40KOs) to retire from boxing. He says there is no reason for Marquez, 39-years-old, to continue fighting for the sake of a fifth fight with Manny Pacquiao. Sulaiman feels Marquez can now retire on top after knocking Pacquiao out in six rounds last December in Las Vegas. Top Rank is very interested in a fifth fight between Marquez and Pacquiao, possibly in the fall in either China or Mexico. Marquez, who wants to continue fighting, has rejected the idea of a fifth fight with Pacquiao, but Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum says the Mexican star is making those kind of comments to receive the biggest offer possible.

Trainer Nacho Beristain is sided with his fighter, Juan Manuel Marquez, and disagrees with the idea of staging a fifth fight with Manny Pacquiao. A few weeks ago Marquez (55-6-1, 40KOs) said that he didn't see any reason to fight Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38KOs) for a fifth time. "I think for me there is no point [in a fifth fight]. We already achieved the desired result. Then why do it? So I also asked several people, several friends that I have around me and they told me not to do it, that there is no point in a fifth fight. I said before the fourth fight that no matter how this fight ends, there can not be a fifth," Marquez said.

Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum told us last week that the boxing community should not worry, that a fifth fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez will get made, even though Marquez has been quoted on BoxingScene.com as saying, "Regarding the fifth fight with Pacquiao, I am not interested in doing it. There is no point. The objective was achieved and everything that was outstanding is now finished. The most important thing is that everything concluded in a positive manner for me. I don't believe that the fans are interested in seeing another rematch between us."

Trainer Nacho Beristain says his star pupil Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1, 40KOs) will not return in the month of April. There have been continued rumors of a tune-up fight in April, which Beristain plays down. He says Marquez, if he started training this week, would be ready to fight by mid-May at the earliest. Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum is planning to meet with Marquez to discuss a fifth fight with Manny Pacquiao for the fall. Arum prefers that both Pacquiao and Marquez stay away from the ring until their fifth fight.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum insists that Juan Manuel Marquez has not turned down a fifth fight with Manny Pacquiao and says the speculation over a possible opponent for Pacquiao - other than Marquez - is unwarranted and suggested that everybody stays quiet. In a conversation with BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard, Arum revealed that he is meeting with Marquez this week, obviously to discuss a fifth fight with Pacquiao which he had planned for September. Arum told us “as long as he’s fighting, he’s not a fool. Of course he’s going to fight Manny rather than fight somebody for a lot less money.”
