Oscar Escandon: record, next fight and profile →
Oscar Escandon has spent about a year now with trainer Ruben Guerrero, who is better known as the father and trainer of welterweight Robert Guerero. The past year has gone from a low — losing an interim 122-pound title to Moises Flores in April 2015 — to a high this past Saturday, when Escandon knocked Robinson Castellanos in seven rounds to capture an interim title at 126 pounds.
Early on, it looked as if the journey of, well, journeyman turned fringe contender Robinson Castellanos was on course for an interim world title victory. He’d knocked Oscar Escandon down in the second round of their fight at the D.C. Armory in Washington, D.C.
Oscar Escandon had to go through training camp twice just to fight once. First his bout with featherweight titleholder Gary Russell Jr. last year was called off less than two weeks from fight night after Russell was injured in training camp. And then he prepared to fight for an interim title against Robinson Castellanos.
