Oscar De La Hoya: record, next fight and profile →
Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya took to social media to explained why he, and Golden Boy partner Bernard Hopkins, were absent from Saturday's post-fight press conference for the lightweight showdown between Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia.
By Keith Idec - Oscar De La Hoya had his antagonistic comments written down on a sheet of paper Thursday. The Hall-of-Fame fighter criticized Gervonta Davis’ team for being overprotective of the undefeated knockout artist. De La Hoya thinks Davis’ handlers lack confidence in him, which is why “The Golden Boy” believes they insisted on a catch weight of 136 pounds for his 12-round fight against Ryan Garcia on Saturday night, a weigh-in two hours later than usual Friday afternoon and a rehydration restriction for a second-day weigh-in late Saturday morning.
Ryan Garcia is unquestionably the most popular boxer Oscar De La Hoya’s company promotes. The 24-year-old Garcia has more than 9 million Instagram followers and a marketing deal with Gatorade, despite the fact that he has held only an interim lightweight title during his six-year professional career. If Garcia’s pay-per-view fight against Gervonta Davis does the type of business De La Hoya anticipates April 22, “The Golden Boy” believes Garcia can become a bigger star than even Canelo Alvarez and himself.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - A decade ago, Oscar De La Hoya told anyone who would listen that a then-fledgling Canelo Alvarez would become the biggest thing in boxing. And based on a perusal of pound-for-pound lists and pay-per-view marquees, he was correct. These days, the Golden Boy kingmaker is working 24 hours a day to spread the word that another captivating 20-something, Ryan Garcia, is ready to assume the throne.
Ryan Garcia’s prayers were officially answered not too long ago. After pacing back and forth and demanding a crack against Gervonta Davis, the 24-year-old will finally be given his wish.
Oscar De La Hoya expects Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia to be such an enormous event that it’ll make a lasting impact on the boxing business. Garcia’s promoter predicted that these two fighters’ popularity on social media and outside of boxing’s faded fan base will make their pay-per-view event a smashing success financially. T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where Davis and Garcia will fight April 22, has been sold out since the day tickets went on sale last month.
Oscar De La Hoya has urged his former star client to pursue his next several fights with some semblance of urgency. De La Hoya, the head of Golden Boy Promotion, was pleased to hear that Canelo Alvarez will be returning to his homeland of Mexico for the first time in over a decade to defend his four 168-pound titles against London’s John Ryder May 6 at Akron Stadium in Guadalajara.
NEW YORK – As Ryan Garcia’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya will have a say in selecting the judging panel for Garcia’s upcoming fight against Gervonta Davis.
Initially, Gervonta Davis viewed Ryan Garcia’s perpetual and brazen callouts as nothing more than inconsequential. However, after years of fulminating with Davis and threatening to turn his lights out, the Baltimore native has finally decided to take Garcia up on his offer.
NEW YORK – Oscar De La Hoya applauded Ryan Garcia’s unwavering willingness to fight Gervonta Davis during their recent press tour. “The Golden Boy,” whose company promotes Garcia, gave himself and his team a proverbial pat on the back, too, for ensuring that the deal was finalized for the highest-profile fight on the boxing calendar.
