All Shakur Stevenson wants is a big fight. That doesn’t seem like a difficult thing to ask for, after all, Stevenson currently resides in one of the most stacked divisions in all of boxing. However, even with the likes of Vasiliy Lomachenko, Gervonta Davis, and plenty of others roaming around, Stevenson has been left out in the cold.

It all started when many of the division’s top names turned their back on Stevenson when approached with the opportunity to fight him. Things only got worse when a showdown against Frank Martin fell through at the last minute. Finally, Stevenson reached his breaking point as matchups against Lomachenko and Emanuel Navarrete went by the wayside.

Vexed and apoplectic, Stevenson abruptly retired. Although few are buying it, the 26-year-old is swearing up and down that he meant it.

Oscar De La Hoya isn’t close friends with Stevenson. So it’s virtually impossible for him to pick up the phone and give him a call. Recently, however, he issued a series of questions to the former Olympic silver medalist.

“Why?” Said De La Hoya to a group of reporters when trying to figure out why Stevenson retired. “He’s so talented. Shakur’s probably one of the best talents in the world. Retire for what? You don’t get the right fights? Have patience.”

In order for Stevenson to come back, a special fighter will have to entice him. One that will force him out of bed and motivate him.

De La Hoya doesn’t have a ton of elite-level 135-pounders but he does have at least one in his stable. So, if Stevenson needs a big fight to get the juices going, De La Hoya has the perfect idea.

“I would love to make William Zepeda vs. Shakur Stevenson. Shakur, please come back out of retirement. Let’s make that fight happen.”
