After months of trying to lock down a venue, Oleg Maskaev's defense of the WBC heavyweight title against mandatory Samuel Peter will land in Cancun, Mexico on March 8.
According to BoxingScene.com's very own James Blears, working the beat for Reuters in Mexico, WBC president Jose Sulaiman announced the fight would take place in the country. It marks the first time a heavyweight title fight will take place in Mexico.
"The fight will be at the Beto Avilar Baseball Park and that is going to make history in Mexico," Sulaiman told Blears. "We must spread the promotion of boxing in the world. We cannot concentrate it in Nevada. Las Vegas is a very important place ... but the world is the owner of boxing. We want boxing to be a sport of the world, not of the casinos. A sport of the people."
The winner must make the first defense of the title against former champion Vitali Klitschko.
