Norbelto Jimenez: record, next fight and profile →
Andrew Moloney was never concerned about the rebuilding process. A trilogy with Joshua Franco left Australia’s Moloney with his lone career blemishes, going 0-2 with one No-Decision in their unlikely three fight series which also saw the end of his secondary WBA junior bantamweight title reign. Many of Australia’s top fighting talents will enjoy the Down Under spotlight underneath the highly anticipated rematch between undisputed lightweight world champion Devin “The Dream” Haney and former champion “Ferocious” George Kambosos Jr. on Saturday, Oct. 15 (Sunday afternoon, Oct. 16 local time) at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia.
Dubai, UAE - This past Saturday night, in a bout for the WBO International super flyweight title, former world champion Donnie Nietes fought to a ten round split draw with Norbelto Jimenez (96-94 Nietes, 96-94 Jimenez, 95-95).
Donnie Nietes extended his seventeen-year unbeaten streak in bizarre—and potentially controversial—fashion. It also comes without a win. The former four-division titlist from Phiilppines showed signs of laboring in the twilight of his incredible career in settling for a ten-round split decision draw with Dominican Republic’s Norbelto Jimenez. Scores were 96-94 Nietes, 96-94 Jimenez and 95-95 even in their battle of hard-luck junior bantamweights, both of whom received conflicting instructions as to the length of the fight.
In less than a month, Filipino 4-division world champion Donnie Nietes (43-1-5, 23 KO's) will be climbing the ring for his upcoming crucial battle against WBA world-ranked Dominican Republic 115-pounder Norbelto "Meneito" Jimenez (30-9-5, 16 KO's) on Saturday, December 11, at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The show will go in Santo Domingo, even if not this weekend. Efforts to proceed with Saturday’s planned closed-doors boxing event in the Dominican Republic capital city were eventually thwarted by the nation’s government and Ministro de Deportes (Ministry of Sports). Former two-time 115-pound title challenger Norbelto Jimenez was due to face countryman Eliezer Aquino in a rematch that was to air live on ESPN Deportes from Coliseo Carlos ‘Teo’ Cruz, only for a decision made on Thursday from higher above to postpone the card and suspend all activities in D.R. until June 3.
Plans for boxing to enjoy a triumphant return in Dominican Republic have been dealt a knockout blow by the local government. A show due to have taken place this Saturday at Coliseo Carlos ‘Teo’ Cruz in the nation’s capital of Santo Domingo has been postponed at the 11th hour, the latest casualty of the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The decision to call off the event came from the national government. Danilo Diaz, the sports minister for D.R. announced via press release that all sports in country will remain suspended through at least June 3.
Boxing will proceed as planned this weekend in Dominican Republic, with the testing protocols in place well indicative of the state of emergency still active in the Caribbean nation. Junior bantamweight contender Norbelto Jimenez will collide with countryman Eliezer Aquino atop a six-fight card this Saturday, airing on ESPN platforms live from Coliseo Carlos ‘Teo’ Cruz in Santo Domingo. The venue will remain closed to the public and will be completely sterilized beginning Thursday morning.
On May 30th, the Dominican Republic’s Shuan Boxing Company will promote a closed-door boxing event with two World Boxing Association Fedelatin titles at stake. From the Carlos Teo Cruz Coliseum, a six-fight event will be held with all of the relevant safety measures in what will be the beginning of event activity for the pioneer organization amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
