As BoxingScene.com first reported on Saturday, former champion Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins (52-6-2, 32KOs) will return on March 9th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Hopkins, who will be 48-years-old by the time of the fight, will attempt to break his own world record.
As reported earlier, Nathan Cleverly retained his WBO light-heavyweight title with an eighth-round stoppage of Shawn Hawk in Los Angeles. Defending the belt for the fourth time, Cleverly floored a game challenger three times in an eye-catching showing that keeps him on track for high-profile unification showdowns in 2013.
Staples Center, Los Angeles, California - Nathan Cleverly (25-0) defended his title and remained undefeated as he battered late replacement Shawn Hawk (22-3-1) and stopped him in the 8th round of their bout. Cleverly started things off fast as he let his hands go early and pounded Hawk with hard combinations. Hawk showed a ton of heart as he continued to fight back in an uphill battle. In round 3, Hawk began exchanging with Cleverly and having success at times as he would land his own flush shots but still catching more in return.
WBO Light Heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly will be making his second trip overseas from the United Kingdom to the United States as he will defend his title against late replacement Shawn Hawk. Cleverly was originally supposed to face Ryan Coyne but due to Coyne’s promotional disputes with Don King not being settled, he was forced to pull out.
NATHAN CLEVERLY is planning a January return to Los Angeles unless Shawn Hawk causes one of boxing’s biggest upsets of recent times. The unbeaten Welshman makes the fourth defence of his WBO light-heavyweight title against Native American Hawk at the Staples Center, Los Angeles on Saturday night. He has trained ahead of his crucial 12 rounder at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card gym and won over the gym where they breed them tougher than most fighting sweatshops.
Nathan Cleverly hopes the first American defence of his WBO light-heavyweight title will end a quiet year on a high and help set up some stellar fights in 2013. Protecting an unblemished 24-fight record, Cleverly boxes as champion for the fourth time on Saturday night when he takes on Shaun Hawk at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Hawk suffered a second career lost last time out and the South Dakota man was only named as a late replacement for Ryan Coyne earlier this week after contractual issues with his promoter Don King put paid to the world-title ambitions of Cleverly's intended opponent. The fraught build-up has been symptomatic of a sometimes frustrating 18 months for Cleverly since his first defence of the world crown in May last year against Poland's Aleksy Kuziemski, a hastily-arranged opponent after Juergen Braehmer had his belt awarded to the Welshman following an injury withdrawal and domestic rival Tony Bellew failed to make the weight at short notice.
