•May 19, 2014

Both have since moved up to the 200-pound limit after suffering knockout defeats at 175-pounds. They were both signed to Frank Warren in 2011, but now each man has jumped over to Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport.

Nathan Cleverly returned to the ring in style as he stopped Shawn Corbin in the second round of their cruiserweight clash in Cardiff. The Welshman, making his debut at the 14 stone 4 pound limit, broke through with a heavy right uppercut in round two from which his Trinidadian opponent never recovered. Two more right hands had Corbin staggering back into the ropes before Cleverly proceeding to rain down a series of power shots on him. The referee stepped in with 40 seconds of the round remaining to halt the contest and allow Cleverly to improve his record to 27-1 with 13 knockouts and also win the WBA Inter-Continental cruiserweight title.

Domestic rivals Nathan Cleverly (27-1, 13KOs) and Tony Bellew (21-2-1, 13KOs) are ready to go to war one more time. Now both fighters are promoted by Eddie Hearn of Matchroom, and both fighters have moved north, by 25-pounds, to the cruiserweight division. Both want the rematch to happen next. Bellew was at ringside in Cardiff and watched Cleverly make his cruiserweight debut with a two round blowout of Sean Corbin.

Earlier this week, former world light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly said it is “inevitable” that he will meet his domestic rival Tony Bellew once again. Inevitable it certainly is. Barring injuries, or an unexpected defeat for either man, the inevitable is expected to become reality in Liverpool in late November. A date has been pencilled in at the city’s Echo Arena, and it could well be for a lot more than British bragging rights. There are whispers that the fight may well be a final eliminator for the WBC title. Bellew currently has a top five ranking with the WBC, and although Cleverly in not ranked by them, that should not prove a serious impediment. The current WBC champion is the Pole, Krzysztof Wlodarczyk. It’s far too early to talk about a deal being done, but the groundwork is certainly being prepared.

The eldest of fighting Smith brothers - Paul Smith (35-3, 20 KOs) - has effectively continued his comeback series with a powerful second-round stoppage of an overmatched Spanish opponent David Sarabia (7-4-2, 2 KOs). Sarabia was put down in the first with a counter right hand to the whiskers, then rocked badly early into the second with a huge right uppercut and then took the beating up until the referee stopped it later in round two. Smith has his eye set on a world title opportunity - maybe against WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham.

Nathan Cleverly hopes to remain on course for an 'inevitable' rematch with Tony Bellew when he makes his cruiserweight debut on Saturday. Cleverly's first fight in his new division will be against Shaun Corbin at Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena, live on Sky Sports. He made the move after losing his WBO light-heavyweight title in a stoppage defeat to Sergey Kovalev, joining Bellew who also stepped up to cruiserweight in search of fresh opportunities. WBC king Adonis Stevenson wrecked Bellew's title hopes by halting him in November, but he returned with a late stoppage defeat over Valery Brudov, despite a seventh round scare.

Nathan Cleverly 26-1 (12 KOs) is hoping to turn a negative into a positive when he returns to the scene of his first professional defeat on May 17 at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena. The Welshman will be embarking on a new chapter in his boxing career at cruiserweight by first taking on the 17-4 (12 KOs) Sean Corbin. Eight months ago, Cleverly who was once tipped to reach boxing superstardom much like compatriot Joe Calzaghe, suffered a catastrophic defeat to the Russian wrecking ball Sergey Kovalev. That night, Cleverly was making the sixth defence of his WBO light heavyweight title and a win over his opponent would’ve propelled him into the bright lights of super fights at 175 lbs. It was a gamble taken by himself and his team. One that was over in the fourth round before the dice had been properly thrown.

"I can still make light-heavyweight, but there's a difference between making the weight and performing at my best at the weight," said Cleverly, who returns to the scene of his final fight at his previous weight against big-hitting Russian Sergey Kovalev last August.
