Mdantsane Indoor Centre, East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa - Mzonke Fana can, at the age of 39, suddenly be looking forward to a few more profitable fights.

And the veteran’s promoters will also be shopping around for reputable opponents for Fana, who upset Takalani Ndlovu last weekend.

The former SA, WBC international and IBF junior lightweight champion rebounded to beat Ndlovu on points and taking home the WBA Pan African junior lightweight title, which had been vacant.

Using his left jab to good advantage, Fana outboxed the 35-year-old Ndlovu to win by 118-108, 117-112 and 116-111.

Ndlovu has held the SA, IBO and World Boxing Federation featherweight titles and the IBO and IBF junior featherweight belts. His first outing as a junior lightweight ended in an unexpected defeat, however.

Fana improved his record to 32-6, including 13 wins inside the distance and Ndlovu’s dropped to 33-10, with 18 shortcut victories.

The fight at the Orient theatre was only Fana’s fourth fight since September 2010. In recent times he lost to Sipho Taliwe, who beat him on points over 12 rounds, and Namibian Paulus Moses, who stopped him in the fourth.

Ndlovu’s left eye was badly swollen towards the end of the bout and to make it worse, referee Wally Snowball took a points away from him for a low blow in the seventh round.

On the undercard, Tshifhiwa Munyai beat former SA bantamweight champion Phumzile Matyhila in a junior featherweight bout. Munyai was in control from the first bell and knocked Matyila down for the count near the end of the eighth round.

The former Commonwealth bantamweight and IBO junior featherweight champion improved his record to 24-2-1; 12. Matyhila’s dropped to 18-3, with 9 knockouts.

Siviwe Hasheni knocked out Lwandile Gugushe in the seventh round to win the vacant SA junior featherweight title.

Balimo Weliya retained his SA super-middleweight title when he outpointed Masixole Botile over 12 rounds. Botile took a count in the final round.

Nozwelethu Mathonsi won the vacant SA flyweight title for women when she outpointed Noxolo Makanavu over ten rounds.

The tournament was presented by Siphato Handi and the Eastern Cape Government.
