Judging The Judges: Gabriel Maestre-Mykal Fox Scorecard Analysis

•Aug 9, 2021

Mykal Fox delivered the best performance of his career, yet still never stood a chance. The leading candidate for the 2021 Robbery of the Year took place this past Saturday live in primetime on Fox TV from The Armory in Minneapolis, Minneapolis. Fox was believed by the majority of viewers to have easily won a twelve-round decision over Venezuela’s Gabriel Maestre, only for judges Gloria Martinez Rizzo (117-110), John Mariano (115-112) and David Singh (114-113) to turn in scorecards suggesting they bore witness to a completely different fight.

The worst in-ring decision of the year—and perhaps of recent memory—is officially under review. An investigation into the scoring of the August 7 welterweight fight between Venezuela’s Gabriel Maestre (4-0, 3KOs) and Maryland’s Mykal Fox (22-3, 5KOs) has been ordered by the World Boxing Association (WBA), whose title was at stake for the contest. Maestre was awarded the win by unanimous decision, in a fight nearly everyone who watched live believed that Fox only deserved to win, but in dominant fashion.

Mykal Fox showed the value of always being ready for any occasion. Unfortunately, it only resulted in history repeating itself. The consummate gym rate from Upper Marlboro, Maryland did his past to make the most of a last-minute opportunity, outboxing two-time Venezuelan Olympian and unbeaten welterweight Gabriel Maestre. Judges John Mariano (115-112), Gloria Martinez Rizzo (117-110) and David Singh (114-113) clearly disagreed, as they were unanimous in favor of Maestre in a WBA “interim” welterweight title fight Saturday evening live on Fox from The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Despite several changes leading to this point, the show is finally ready to go on this weekend. Eimantnas Stanionis and Luis Collazo both made weight for their scheduled 10-round bout just above the welterweight limit, which headlines a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on Fox tripleheader Saturday evening, live from The Armory in Minneapolis. The bout marks the second straight Fox show to go head-to-head with the Tokyo Olympics, marking the only televised boxing action from stateside over the two-week period.
