The countdown to the middleweight debut Jaime Munguía (34-0; 27 KOs) has begun. The boxer will face Irishman Gary "Spike" O'Sullivan (30-3; 21 KO) in a fight agreed upon at 160 pounds on Saturday January 11 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

After seven weeks of preparation at 3,200 meters high at the Otomí Ceremonial Center, the student of Erik “El Terrible” Morales returned home. He made a light practice in the Alto Boxing Club to reach the match in fine fashion.

Munguía was proclaimed the WBO 154-pound world champion on May 12, 2018 against Sadam Ali (27-3, 14 KOs). He successfully defended his belt five times at 154 and now seeks to step forward in his career. 

“Those six pounds that I am gaining will help me a lot. I was already going theough a lot of wear to reach 154. I believe that now I will get more complete. I'll have a lot more in the fight,” said the 23-year-old from Tijuana to Marcos Romero.

“Let's see how I feel, now that I don't have to wear out my body with an extra six pounds [to my frame]. It was quite a sacrifice [to reach 154]."

Munguai is going to push for the biggest statement possible in his middleweight debut.

“I think it is a fight that's going to end by knockout. I think in the fourth round,” predicted the fighter.

In its corner is the experience of four division world champion, Erik Morales, who assumes the role of a mentor and guide for Munguía.

“It has helped me a lot. He has a lot of experience in world championship fights, he has fought against the best fighters in the world. He has enough experience. The mistakes he has made, I try not to make them. We try to grab as much good as possible from each person who is on the team,” concluded the boxer.
