Johannesburg - Moruti Mthalani's IBF flyweight title defense is back on track, but not quite in the way South Africa's longest existing international boxing champion must have desired. In another under-priced purse bid organized by the IBF this week, only Thai promoter Jimmy Chaichotchuang participated, which has resulted in Mthalane now due to fight Amnat Ruenroeng in Thailand within a mandatory 90 days. “The exact date has yet to be finalized,” Mthalane's trainer Nick Durandt said on Friday. “I'm waiting to hear from the promoter, but I would imagine it is likely to be some time in January if there are no further complications.

Johannesburg – The cancellation of boxer Moruti Mthalane's “jinxed” fight in Germany on Saturday night could be a blessing in disguise, his trainer Nick Durandt said on Tuesday. “My initial reaction was to hit the ceiling,” he said. “There have been so many strange developments regarding the fight, which had already been postponed for a month under (such) suspicious circumstances, that an Agatha Christie mystery thriller would find it difficult to emulate all the intrigue.” Mthalane was to have made a mandatory defence of his IBF flyweight title against European champion Silvio Olteanu.

WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz (45-3, 26 KOs) will make a voluntary defense of his world titleon October 19th against WBO number 7 ranked Isaac Ekpo (22-1, 16 KO's) from Nigeria. The fight is going to take place in Leipzig, Germany. Ekpo, unbeaten since 2008 and winner of his last 18, has spent his entire career in Nigeria and Ghana. Based on his record he is taking a serious step up in class with the champion. Stieglitz will have to face mandatory challenger Arthur Abraham next in a trilogy bout.

Moruti Mthalane will have to defend his IBF flyweight title against Silvio Olteanu in Germany. German promoters SES have won the purse bids to stage the fight. Their winning R110 000 bid [$11,215.38 dollars] was on Thursday described by Mthalane’s trainer, Nick Durandt as "one of the lowest I can recall in recent times for a world title fight.” Durandt said it was “a sad reflection on the state of South African boxing”. No South African promoters bid to stage the fight. Mthalane has to make a mandatory title defence against Olteanu, a Romania-born Spaniard. The bidding process was held in New York.

IBF Championship Committee chairman Lindsey Tucker Jr has informed Mthalane’s promoter, well-known South African Branco Milenkovic and international promoter and matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing who represents Saludar in partnership with Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani, that Mthalane “is due for his mandatory defense on or before June 1, 2013.
