Four days after his nationally televised main event was postponed the morning of June 18 because his manager tested positive for COVID-19, Mikkel LesPierre was back to work at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. The junior welterweight contender had agreed to reschedule his 10-round fight with Jose Pedraza for July 14 in Las Vegas. Suddenly, though, LesPierre was asked to box 12 days sooner than that because Jamel Herring had tested positive for COVID-19 and couldn’t defend his WBO junior lightweight title Thursday night against Jonathan Oquendo.
For the second time in less than two weeks, Jose Pedraza is ready to experience life in ‘The Bubble.’ The 31-year old Puerto Rican southpaw returns to Las Vegas, barely 10 days after having to depart town without an official fight to show for his troubles. He was due to face Brooklyn’s Mikkel LesPierre (22-1-1, 14KOs) in a junior welterweight matchup atop a June 18 ESPN card live from MGM Grand Conference Center, only for the bout to get scrapped due to LesPierre’s manager, Jose Taveras testing positive for coronavirus which forced their entire team off of the show.

Jose Pedraza and Mikkel LesPierre have literally been here before. This time around, they hope to make it beyond the scale and into the ring. For the second time in two weeks, both boxers made weight for a scheduled ESPN headliner. The two are scheduled to collide atop a six-fight card, which takes place Thursday evening at MGM Grand Conference Center (“The Bubble”) in Las Vegas beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT.
Chances are, Jose Pedraza will check in at a career-heaviest weight for the second time in two weeks. It’s not because the two-division titlist from Cidra, Puerto Rico is out of shape. Quite the opposite, in fact, as he braces for a rescheduled July 2 clash versus former junior welterweight title challenger Mikkel LesPierre (22-1-1, 14KOs).

ESPN and promoter Top Rank have lost another main event due to COVID-19. Jamel Herring acknowledged in a Tweet issued Tuesday afternoon that he tested positive for the virus last week. His second defense of the WBO junior lightweight title, a 12-rounder against Jonathan Oquendo that was scheduled for July 2 in Las Vegas, thus has been postponed indefinitely.
