This past week it was reported that a deal was imminent for WBO super featherweight champ Vasyl Lomachenko and WBA lightweight champ Jorge Linares to square off. However, Linares also holds the position as WBC Diamond champion and had been ordered to face Mikey Garcia, who also holds a WBC title at that same weight, after both champions had a voluntary defense.
Four division world champion Adrien Broner (33-3, 24 KOs) is putting together a target list for 2018 - which he promises will be his biggest year yet. First up, the controversial boxer is scheduled to return to the ring on April 21, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
This past Saturday night, Jorge Linares retained his World Boxing Association lightweight world title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Filipino fighter Mercito Gesta. The 32-year-old Linares, of Venezuela, made the third defense of his title and extended his win streak to 14 straight fights, with his victory at the Los Angeles Forum.
NEW YORK – Once the initial disappointment subsided, Mikey Garcia realized the one-month postponement of his fight against Sergey Lipinets was for the best. The last thing Garcia would’ve wanted was to beat Lipinets, only have his win degraded due to Lipinets’ injury to his right hand. Lipinets essentially was sparring with one hand before their fight was postponed last week from February 10 to March 10.
NEW YORK – Adrien Broner made it clear he wasn’t exactly thrilled to stand next to Mikey Garcia on a stage inside a Manhattan restaurant Wednesday. The former four-division champion wants another shot at Garcia, who beat Broner convincingly in their 12-round, 140-pound fight July 29 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. A rematch seems unnecessary because Garcia clearly won a unanimous decision, but Garcia is confident Broner will bounce back to win his next fight.
The World Boxing Council has issued a new order, which directs WBC lightweight champion Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) and mandatory challenger Jorge Linares (43-3, 27 KOs) to begin negotiations on March 12 - provided the two boxers are victorious in their upcoming fights.
BoxingScene.com recently caught up with WBA lightweight champion Jorge Linares (43-3) who faces Mercito Gesta (31-1-2) at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. on Saturday night. The fight tops a HBO doubleheader with Lucas Matthysse facing Tewa Kiram in the co-feature bout.
Anthony Crolla revealed who he’s backing for the upcoming bout between Jorge Linares and Mercito Gesta, picking the man who took his WBA World Lightweight Title from him in 2016. Speaking on our BoxNation Podcast, ‘Million Dollar’ Crolla thinks the Venezuelan will retain his belt this Saturday without too much trouble, and doubts that Gesta will hear the final bell against the three-weight World Champion.
Three division world champion Mikey Garcia has a big goal in mind - he wants to take over as the best fighter of this generation, after the recent retirement of Floyd Mayweather Jr. On March 10 from the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Texas - Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) will attempt to capture a world title in a fourth weight class when he takes on unbeaten IBF junior welterweight champion Sergey Lipinets (13-0, 10 KOs), who is making his first title defense.
