Mikey Garcia: record, next fight and profile →
Mikey Garcia is back—just not yet in the ring. The former four-division titlist elected to speak on a number of subjects while serving as a guest host on Wednesday’s installment of Inside PBC Boxing on FS1. Among the topics addressed was his status as a long-reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight titlist, which—as BoxingScene.com previously reported—came to an end earlier this week.
Former four division world champion Mikey Garcia is not coming back to the lightweight division, at least not now. According to ESPN Deportes, Garcia will be named by the World Boxing Council as "Champion Emeritus," so the sanctioning body's lightweight title will be vacant pending a showdown between mandatory challenger Luke Campbell and the highest ranked available contender - who will battle it out for the world title at 135 pounds.
After dismantling Anthony Crolla in style, Vasyl Lomachenko could be set to face another Englishman next after admitting he would welcome the chance to fight Luke Campbell. The Ukrainian successfully defended his WBA and WBO lightweight titles in Los Angeles on Friday, stopping former world champion Crolla in the fourth round.
Team Garcia’s founder and multi-division champion Mikey Garcia steps in the ring with multi-division world champion and living legend Eric Morales in a (4) round exhibition fight. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to help support Team Izaac Colunga.
WBA/WBO lightweight world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko (12-1, 9 KOs) returns to the ring on Friday night, when he headlines a card at the Staples Center in Los Angles and defense his belts against mandatory challenger Anthony Crolla (34-6-3, 13 KOs), who previously held the WBA's version of the belt.
Next week, World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman will hold a meeting with the current lightweight world champion of the organization, Mikey Garcia, to discuss the future of the green and gold belt at 135 pounds. Garcia has not made a defense of the title since July of last year, when he decisioned Robert Easter in a unification encounter.
As Mikey Garcia continues to mull his next move in the ring, the brass at the World Boxing Council (WBC)—and presumably Luke Campbell as well—patiently await his decision. The reigning lightweight titlist is enjoying downtime following his lopsided 12-round loss to unbeaten welterweight titlist Errol Spence Jr. earlier this month in his bid to claim a major title in his fifth weight division. Garcia moved up two weight divisions for the welterweight title fight from his lightweight title unification win over Robert Easter Jr. last July.
By Michael Rosenthal - First Errol Spence picked on a little guy. Now he’s after an old guy. Errol, with due respect, you’re going to have to pick on someone who doesn’t enter the ring at a distinct disadvantage at some point. Spence turned in a brilliant performance against the smaller Mikey Garcia last Saturday, enh...
Fox Sports went all in for its first Pay-Per-View, essentially investing four months worth of time and resources into its March 16 show, topped by Errol Spence’s 12-round shutout of Mikey Garcia in their battle of unbeaten pound-for-pound entrants at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The platform’s efforts proved to be a game-changer, especially given the commercial success; so, too, is the manner in which Fox Sports PPV events will be made available, as well as the extended period for such shows to remain available for purchase.
Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum has continued to criticize last Saturday's performance by Mikey Garcia. Garcia, a four division world champion, moved up by two weight classes to challenges IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
