Mikey Garcia has never been shy about offering his opinion on any given subject but remains genuinely torn when pressed to pick a winner in one of the biggest fights to be made today.
What he does know is that he’d love nothing more than to pair it up with his own blockbuster fight to set up an even bigger event down the road.
Fans, media and even many boxers have long called for a superfight between unbeaten welterweight titlists and pound-for-pound entrants Errol Spence and Terence Crawford. The two have been circling one another realistically ever since Crawford (36-0, 27KOs) moved up to capture his third divisional title following a one-sided 9th round stoppage of unbeaten Jeff Horn in June 2018.
Crawford and Spence (26-0, 21KOs) have both fought three times since then, but have yet to bridge the gap in terms of making their dream matchup a reality. The time which passed since then has only further split public opinion as to whom would prevail.
“I think that’s a very complicated fight for both,” Garcia (40-1, 30KOs) noted when posed that very question by promoter Eddie Hearn during a recent Instagram Live interview. “Neither one of them has faced another guy that can box effectively, that can use the height and reach and has great ring generalship and IQ like themselves.
“Terence has fought some of the better fighters in the lower divisions. Lately, he hasn’t really had the challenges. He hasn’t really been facing [the] top challenges. Errol is a driven righter. I think it’s a great matchup.”
Garcia had his own run at Spence, falling well short in their March 2019 clash in his failed bid to become a five-division titlist. The 32-year old from Oxnard, California has since picked up his first win at the new weight, scoring a competitive but clear 12-round win over former two-division titlist Jessie Vargas this past February.
Having won titles at 126-, 130-, 135- and 140-pounds, Garcia remains intent on fighting at the championship level in his current chosen weight division. Not only does he have the perfect next fight in mind to achieve that goal, but one where—should the bouts properly align—the winners meet to determine ultimate welterweight supremacy.
“It’s complicated to pick a winner,” insists Garcia. “It would be perfect if I do the fight with Manny, that’d be another great matchup that we’d all talk about. There are great fights at welterweights at the moment.”
