Mikey Garcia: I Came Back Down Because I Want To Unify 135

By Steve Kim

Despite having won belts in four separate weight classes, the one thing that Mikey Garcia hasn't accomplished yet is unifying any of those titles.

He gets that chance on July 28th as he puts his WBC lightweight title on the line against IBF belt-holder, Robert Easter, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

His last two fights had been at junior welterweight as he defeated Adrien Broner last summer and then on March 10th he out-pointed Sergey Lipinets for the IBF 140-pound belt.

"The reason why we are coming back to '35 is because we have an opportunity to unify the division and if you remember even when I was leading up to the Lipinets fight I always mentioned that my plan was to come back down to lightweight," explained Garcia, this past Saturday at the Staples Center, where his upcoming fight was formally announced.

"The opportunity to win a fourth division title against Lipinets was exciting and great and that's why I took that fight," he continued. "But my intentions were always to come back to the lightweight division."

In Easter he's facing a fellow undefeated boxer who has several inches in height on him.

Garcia (38-0, 30 KOs) says - "I know he's a tough fighter, I've seen him on several occasions now. As far as his toughness there's no doubt that he's a tough guy. He presents other challenges that previous opponents don't present, his height and reach advantages are something I have to make adjustments for.

"But that's why I say these are the fights that excite me the most and more importantly I'm facing somebody different and he's hungrier than ever, I can tell. He definitely doesn't want to lose this and he is an undefeated champion. Those are the fights that I want, fighting champions because those are the fights that will elevate me and my legacy."
I hope Mikey knows that he’s gonna have to endure lifetime hatred from most Loma fans who’d rather Mikey just exit 135 to keep Loma safe.
Name them.
