RENO, Nevada – Mikaela Mayer finally got the stoppage Saturday night that she sought for more than a year.
The 2016 U.S. Olympian knocked down Alejandra Zamora in the first round and dominated her over the ensuing five rounds. After another lopsided two-minute period in the sixth, Zamora’s trainer decided she shouldn’t continue and instructed referee Russell Mora to stop their scheduled 10-round, super featherweight fight at Reno-Sparks Convention Center.
Mayer (12-0, 5 KOs), of Colorado Springs, Colorado, ended a four-fight knockout drought by stopping Argentina’s Zamora (7-4, 1 KO). She also defended her regional NABF 130-pound championship in the fight that immediately preceded the WBO featherweight title bout between Shakur Stevenson and Joet Gonzalez.
Mayer remained the aggressor throughout the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds, and essentially picked apart Zamora.
She snapped back Zamora’s head with a right hand early in the fifth round. Mayer assaulted Zamora to the body later in the fifth.
Mayer landed several stiff jabs and a left hook in a one-sided third round.
After flooring Zamora in the first round, Mayer went after her throughout the second round. Zamora was able to avoid the type of shots Mayer landed in the first round and didn’t seem hurt in those second two minutes.
A left-right combination by Mayer buckled Zamora’s legs and made her fall to the canvas early in the first round. Zamora managed to withstand Mayer’s power for the rest of the round.
