If there’s a major fight involving a boxer who has Freddie Roach in his corner, you can safely bet that at same point the Hall of Fame trainer will pick his charge to win by knockout. Naturally, that is what he believes – and continues to insist – will take place this weekend when Miguel Cotto defends his World middleweight championship versus Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. The HBO Pay-Per-View headliner takes place this Saturday at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.
IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs), who recently added the IBF belt to his collection by stopping David Lemieux in seven rounds on October 17th at the Madison Square Garden, will be in attendance at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas when Miguel Cotto faces Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on Saturday night.

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was a few months shy of his 11th birthday when Miguel Cotto turned pro in 2001 and was entering his teen years when the boxing superstar from Puerto Rico began his prime years. He was only 15 years old at the start of his own pro career in Oct. ‘05, at which point Cotto had already become an established headliner on HBO. Ten years later, the current face of boxing in Mexico prepares for a blockbuster showdown with the fighter he watched rise from prospect to champion to star attraction. The two collide this weekend at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, airing live on HBO Pay-Per-View (Saturday, 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT).
LONDON - Boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez has refused to look too far ahead as he prepares for his ’50-50’ fight with four division world champion Miguel Cotto. The stacked 160-pound division is brimming with talent including WBA and IBF knockout king Gennady Golovkin, WBO champion Andy Lee who defends his title against the undefeated Billy Joe Saunders, with Daniel Jacobs set to take on former champion Peter Quillin.
By Cliff Rold - Oscar De La Hoya is calling it a disgrace. Miguel Cotto is going to call it extra cash in his pocket. Everyone else shouldn’t give a damn. In a fight that might be struggling to generate the box office it needs to cover costs, the WBC’s ruling Tuesday that they are stripping Cotto over an issue of sanctioning fees and step aside fees to Gennady Golovkin made headlines. It’s giving everyone something to talk about and that can’t be a bad thing. That one of the promoters can holler ‘disgrace!’ is fine. It might mean some venom at the final pre-fight press conference Wednesday. ESPN began extended coverage of the fight Tuesday. They’ll have plenty of footage if that happens, as will this site, Ring’s site, Fight News, Yahoo, USA Today, and just about every other outlet covering the event. It adds a little extra personality to a fight between two exciting guys in the ring who don’t have much personality between them. Here’s the reality of the situation. Nothing of substance really changed.
