Former four division world champion Miguel Angel Cotto of Puerto Rico is not ruling out the possibility of a fall showdown with fellow four time world champion Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico.
Considered to be two of the best Latin American fighters in recent years, Cotto and Marquez had already tried to negotiate a fight in 2016, but they were never able to reach an agreement on some of the details - specifically the catch-weight.
"The cards are on the table. The fight with Juan Manuel is very viable, a fight that can become a reality, a fight that can happen. What's left to do is reach an agreement. We have to sit at the same table and reach an agreement as to the points of the fight," Cotto said to Gople a Golpe.
Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) is back on February 25th, when he faces James Kirkland in Texas. It will be Cotto's first fight since losing to Saul" Canelo" Alvarez in November 2015.
Marquez has been out the ring for a very long, with his last ring appearance back in May of 2014 - when he won a twelve round decision over Mike Alvarado at The Forum in Los Angeles. Lingering issues with his knee have created numerous delays for a planned return. Now at 43-years-old, time is quickly running out for the Mexican veteran.
Juan Manuel, during the same program, said a showdown with Cotto would be an interesting bout that obviously catches his eye.
"An interesting fight, a good opportunity. The great legacy of Miguel Cotto, that would be an important factor. I have always insisted how I feel. We are doing well, we are training, not at hundred percent, but we are training. You have to think about whether or not you can do that fight in terms of health and for the fans of boxing. I want to make a competitive fight," said Márquez.
