According to legal adviser Gaby Penagaricano, WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs) could potentially make a decision regarding his future, and his opponent, by next week.

Cotto captured the WBC title last June with a one-sided drubbing of Sergio Martinez. There were serious negotiations to face Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on May 2nd. Those negotiations fell apart a few weeks ago. Canelo is now contracted to face James Kirkland, potentially on the same May date.

Cotto has been mentioned as a possible "Plan B" opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr., who is currently involved in serious negotiations to face Manny Pacquiao on May 2nd.

"We are still in the planning stage, most likely to fight in May or June. We are a concentrated on fighting on of before the summer," Penagaricano told El Vocero. "We are working on several potential opponents and we don't want to reveal their names because we are in negotiations. I think that by next week the matter might mature to the point where we'll be able to make an announcement."
