Miguel Berchelt: record, next fight and profile →
Last week newly crowned WBO junior lightweight champion Jamel Herring took to Twitter to declare that WBC junior lightweight champion Miguel Berchelt had turned down a unification bout and that he would likely be facing his mandatory challenger next.
WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt was ringside for Jamel Herring's upset unanimous decision victory over Masayuki Ito in Kissimmee, Florida. With the victory Herring captured the WBO super featherweight title in a bout that headlined an ESPN doubleheader.
KISSIMMEE, Fla.—Jamel Herring’s super featherweight title win over Masayuki Ito put him in rare company, becoming just the third Long Island (N.Y.)-bred boxer to win a major title and the first U.S. Marine to since 1982 to accomplish the feat. Now he wants to become the first boxer to do something that no other super featherweight has been able to do since 2005: unify the titles.
NEW YORK – Gary Russell Jr. will remain at featherweight for one reason and one reason only. But if the WBC 126-pound champion cannot secure the title unification fight he wants with Leo Santa Cruz, he plans to move up to 130 pounds for his next fight. Russell out-classed Spain’s Kiko Martinez on Saturday before their fight was stopped in the fifth round due to a nasty cut over Martinez’s left eye.
The Miguel Berchelt-Francisco Vargas rematch drew a peak audience of over one million Saturday night. Nielsen Media Research revealed that ESPN’s broadcast of Berchelt’s technical-knockout victory over Vargas peaked at 1,099,000 viewers. Berchelt basically battered a faded Vargas until Vargas’ trainer, Joel Diaz, instructed referee Jay Nady to stop their scheduled 12-round, 130-pound title fight following the fifth round.
Mexico's Miguel 'Alacran' Berchelt has not established what will happen in the second half of 2019, but he wants to be aware of any possibility, and precisely because of that he will be in the front row to watch the upcoming fight between Masayuki Ito and Jamel Herring this coming May 25 in Florida.
From the opening bell, Miguel Berchelt didn’t waste any time in once again taking the fight to Francisco Vargas. At the end of the fight, he also didn’t waste any time in lining up his next one. The defending 130-pound titlist was relentless in a 6th round stoppage of Vargas in their ESPN-televised rematch Saturday evening in Tucson, Arlz.

An absolute incredible offensive performance by Miguel Berchelt, who threw 728 punches in six rounds (121 per round) and landed 293 (49 per round). Berchelt landed 45% of his power punches. Francisco Vargas put up excellent numbers as well, landing an avg. of 24 of 79 per round.
