There was a time, and if it feels like a long time ago now it’s because it kind of is, but there was a time when Mercito Gesta was considered one of the young guns to watch in boxing. Saturday night, with a win over former titlist and Olympian Joseph Diaz, Gesta snared what might be the biggest win of a twenty year career.
Gesta, Diaz Fight Photos Gallery - Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (33-3-3, 17 KOs) proved he is still in the running as one of the top contenders in his division with a split decision victory in the main event attraction.
By Jake Donovan - Mercito Gesta rose to the occasion at a time when Joseph Diaz Jr. was in desperate need of a redemption story. An entertaining ten-round main event proved far too difficult for the California judges to properly score. In the end, it was Gesta who prevailed by split decision in their makeshift main event Saturday evening on DAZN from the Walter Pyramid on the campus of California State University-Long Beach.
By Jake Donovan - Whether a fresh start or an entirely new direction, Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz is in desperate need of a makeover. The former IBF junior lightweight titlist is hopeful of a career turnaround beginning with this weekend’s showdown with fringe contender Mercito Gesta. Their bout was upgraded to main event status after original headliner Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez (44-1, 30KOs) was grossly above the contracted weight for his eventually canceled light heavyweight clash versus Gabriel Rosado.
Joseph Diaz and Mercito Gesta were prepared to steal the show. They are now tasked with headlining the event. Both boxers embraced the new role as they weighed in for their scheduled 12-round junior welterweight contest. Diaz tipped the scales at a career-heaviest 139.4 pounds. Gesta was 137.2 pounds for his first fight in nearly a year.
Gilberto Ramirez will have to wait a little longer to rebound from his lone career defeat. Added to his redemption pile is finding a weight at which to safely compete. BoxingScene.com has learned that Ramirez’s light heavyweight bout versus Gabriel Rosado will no longer move forward this weekend. The matchup was due to headline Saturday’s DAZN show from The Walter Pyramid on the campus of California State University-Long Beach in Long Beach, California. However, Ramirez was removed from the show after showing up well over the contracted limit for their scheduled 12-round light heavyweight contest.
