Mercito Gesta: record, next fight and profile →
The trainer and co-manager of undefeated Filipino southpaw Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta says a fight against four-division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez on July 14 at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Texas is a possibility.
Unbeaten lightweight Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta continued his march toward a world title shot with an eighth-round technical knockout of Oscar Cuero in the opener to the Brandon Rios-Richard Abril pay-per-view telecast Saturday night.
Super bantamweight Tramaine Williams (1-0, 1KOs) made his pro debut with a first round demolition of Jesse Aguiano (0-2). Williams controlled the action and battered Aguiano in the corner until referee Robert Byrd stepped in to wave it off at 2:21.
For the past year, it seems like Vince Parra, trainer and co-manager to budding lightweight contender Mercito Gesta, has been clamoring for the biggest fights possible for his undefeated charge. To see Gesta (24-0-1, 12 knockouts) lined up with a pay per view undercard appearance at the Mandalay Bay this Saturday night against unknown Oscar Cuero (15-7, 12 knockouts) may be a little underwhelming for Parra, yet he understands Mercito must take what he can get at this point in hopes of landing a big fight later in the year.
Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas - The weights are in for Saturday night's HBO pay-per-view. In a battle for the vacant WBA lightweight championship, interim beltholder Richard Abril (17-2-1, 8KOs) came in at 135-pounds. Former champion Brandon Rios (29-0-1, 22KOs) weighed in at 137, two-pounds over the lightweight limit. He came back later to weigh-in a second time at 137. Rios struggled to make weight for his last fight in December against John Murray and initially planned to move up to 140 before agreeing to this fight.
