Don Haskins Convention Center, El Paso, Texas - In a battle of undefeated contenders,  McJoe Arroyo (17-0, 8KOs) won a ten round unanimous technical decision over Arthur Villanueva (27-1, 14KOs) to capture the vacant IBF super flyweight championship. The scores were 97-92, 98-91 and 98-91.

Arroyo started well, but soon he allowed Villanueva to come into his own with a high workrate. The action was had twists and turns with each fighter having his moments. There were plenty of head clashes due to their styles.

Villanueva lost a point during the sixth for coming in with his head, and near the end of the same round - a clash of heads opened up a bad cut above the right eye of Villanueva. Both fighters were having a lot of trouble finding the proper range to throw punches. And because of that there were plenty of clinches to go around.

Villanueva srarted to rally late after sensing the fight might end early due to the cut. He was right, after the ringside doctor stopped the fight during the tenth and the contest went to the scorecards.
