The gloves controversy remains a hot topic. In the first fight between Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana, Mayweather objected to a set of gloves that Maidana wanted to wear and then to a second set of the same kind of gloves. Maidana ended up entering the ring on fight night wearing a different kind of Everlast. Now, with Maidana saying the gloves situation hasn’t been resolved for the rematch — Maidana wants to wear his preferred type — Mayweather was asked about the situation in an interview with a small group of reporters on July 14.

NEW YORK – The best boxer in the world promised Monday that the result of his Sept. 13 rematch against Marcos Maidana would be at least as convincing as two judges considered his performance in their first fight. Floyd Mayweather Jr. does plan, though, to take a different approach to training these next two months for their Showtime Pay-Per-View main event at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. “This camp is going to be totally different,” Mayweather said. “I’m going to let my body rest a lot more and I’m going to do a lot more physical training for this fight. Because it’s safe to say I’m not fighting a boxer, I’m fighting an MMA fighter.”

He’s earning more money through boxing than any other athlete in his sport, but it’s still fair to wonder how he maintains the will and energy and the love for fighting after all these years and as he grows older. “Some days are better than others, as far as I’m more like ‘OK, this is what I love to do,’ and some days it’s more like, ‘This is not what I want to do,’ ” he told a handful of media members on July 14.

It took more than two months to officially declare that Floyd Mayweather’s next opponent would be the same as his last, as he faces Marcos Maidana on September 13 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It even took more than an hour past the promised 1:00pm start time for their press conference to begin at Times Square in New York City. What didn’t take very much effort, however, was justifying why Mayweather agreed to just the second rematch in a Hall of Fame career spanning 18 years and approaching his 47th prize fight.

Floyd Mayweather had been speaking to the assembled public in Washington, D.C., about how long he’d been at the top of the sport when he pointed to Robert Garcia, the trainer of Marcos Maidana — Mayweather faces Maidana in a rematch on Sept. 13. “I was champion when he was champion,” Mayweather said. “And then he long gone away from the sport, I’m champion. And once I retire you Sept. 13, I’ll still be champion.” Garcia felt he had to respond while sitting on the dais. “Hey Floyd,” the trainer said. “Oh now you want to talk,” Mayweather responded. “You had your chance to talk.” The war of words began, with Mayweather landing some heavy blows.

The argument about which gloves Marcos Maidana could and would use for his first fight with Floyd Mayweather brought drama up until the last minute. Though the rematch is official for Sept. 13, Maidana and his team had been coy about whether the Argentine brawler would be able to use his preferred gloves this time around. There’s a reason for that. “To tell you the truth, it hasn’t really been finalized yet,” Maidana told reporters in a conference call on July 14, with Golden Boy Promotions’ Eric Gomez serving as a translator. “As you know, in the first fight, he didn’t allow me to use my gloves. I’m sure that’s going to be the situation again this time. “I want him to allow me to use my gloves. I want it to be finalized already, the glove situation. I want to be able to use my gloves. For some reason he’s not allowing me to use my gloves. I don’t hit that hard. I don’t hit as hard as Canelo [Alvarez].” Why, then, would he sign for this fight if the gloves situation had not yet been resolved? “Because the gloves is not a big issue,” Maidana said. “If I’m going to beat him, I’m going to beat him no matter what gloves I use. I would like to use my gloves. So that’s not the important factor. If I’m going to beat him, I’m going to beat him one way or the other.”
