Over the last few days, former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. had a great time in Russia. During the stay, he set aside some time to answer questions about his career and the sport with local reporters.
He was asked for his opinion on the recent victory by Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, who won a twelve round decision over Miguel Cotto to capture the WBC middleweight championship - and how he felt about a potential fight between Canelo and his mandatory challenger, WBA/IBO/IBF champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin.
Mayweather had no interest in answering those questions, as he quickly named Andre Ward (28-0, 15KOs) as the main opponent he would like to see Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) face.
He feels Golovkin is being overhyped and doesn't possess the big name that his team would like others to believe he has.
Mayweather said he wasn't impressed with Golovkin's string of knockout victories. He will be impressed if Golovkin faces Ward - and beats the Olympic gold medal winner.
Ward, a former unified super middleweight champion, recently announced that he was moving up to light heavyweight - after Golovkin's team rejected a proposal to face him. Ward says Golovkin's promoter, K2 Promotions, ruled him out for 2016 and said potentially they could face each other in 2017. Ward was unwilling to wait that long.
"I believe that a good option for Golovkin to fight is Andre Ward," said Mayweather. "If he beats Andre Ward, then I'll be impressed - but until then he's a boxer without a big name."
