Last Saturday’s SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast continued the flagship series’ upward ratings trend, with the main event between Unified Super Lightweight World Champion Danny Garcia and Mauricio Herrera generating a peak audience of 1.1 million viewers. Garcia’s star-power continues to rise with this appearance on SHOWTIME®, with Saturday’s bout attracting nearly 20% more viewers than his last appearance on a SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast (April 27, 2013 against Zab Judah). The Garcia vs. Herrera bout attracted an average audience of 972,000 viewers.

Angel Garcia, father/trainer of WBC/WBA junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia, says Mauricio Herrera did not do enough to win the titles on Saturday night in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Herrera put forth a very good effort and fell on the cards with a majority decision. One judge had scored it a 114-114 draw, the exact score that several experts tallied at ringside. Angel complains that Herrera fought dirty and the referee allowed it to continue. He wasn't impressed with Danny's victory, but fully believes his son pulled in enough rounds to get the decision.

by David P. Greisman - Not every fight means everything, but every fight means something. Some of these somethings mean less, though just because they mean less doesn’t mean they mean nothing at all. We knew that this past Saturday’s Showtime card aired out of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, wouldn’t be the most meaningful broadcast. That didn’t make the fights meaningless. Boxing at times can resemble episodic television programming, moving the characters and drama along and building toward conflict and a conclusion. Middleweight contender Daniel Jacobs is being built up toward his second world title shot, which will likely come against Peter Quillin. Heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder is being built up toward his first world title shot, which is expected to come against the winner of the upcoming rematch between Bermane Stiverne and Chris Arreola. Junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia is continuing to be built up as a star and potential future opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Following his close points to loss to WBC/WBA junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia, junior welterweight contender Mauricio Herrera said he was open to idea of facing another tough top contender in his very next fight - and specifically named Lucas Matthysse (34-3, 32KOs). Matthysse has a tentative return date of April 26th, which makes a Herrera fight a tough match to make with the short time span.

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico - Unified Super Lightweight World Champion Danny "Swift" Garcia (28-0, 16 KOs) defeated Mauricio "El Maestro" Herrera (20-4, 7 KOs) via a majority decision to remain undefeated on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING®. With the raucous crowd partial to the defending champion, whose father was born and raised in Puerto Rico, Garcia seemed to be carried by the cheers in what turned out to be the toughest fight of his career. At the end of the fight, SHO STATS reported that Garcia had landed 150 power punches compared to Herrera's 82. Herrera landed more overall punches with 221 to Garcia's 204. The final scores were 114-114, 116-112 and, 116-112.

Danny Garcia retained his WBC and WBA titles by defeating Mauricio Herrera on Saturday night. The American also remained undefeated by winning the light-welterweight bout in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, on a majority decision. Two judges scored the bout 116-112 in favour of Garcia and the third had it 114-114 as Garcia improved his record to 28-0. Herrera, also a American citizen, dropped to 20-4, including seven knockouts.
