Matt Korobov: record, next fight and profile →
The co-promoter behind WBC #14-rated middleweight Matvey Korobov says Team Korobov will file a protest to Virginia State officials over their fighter’s controversial majority draw last Saturday (May 11) against Virginia-based fighter Immanuwel Aleem.
Mike Borao and Jameel McCline couldn’t believe what they were told when an official from the Virginia Boxing & Wrestling Commission came to Matt Korobov’s locker room Saturday night. Korobov’s co-managers made a bee line for ringside once they learned that the result of Korobov’s bout with Immanuwel Aleem had been changed from a majority-decision victory for Korobov to a majority draw. The best explanation anyone from Virginia’s commission could give them was that they made a mathematical mistake while adding up the scores following a 10-round middleweight match Korobov seemingly won

Fairfax, Virginia - In the opening television bout middleweight contenders Matt Korobov of Orotukan, Russia and Immanuwel Aleem of East Meadow, N.Y. stalked each other for 10 rounds. They took turns pressing the action and playing the aggressor, dishing out and absorbing the best that each had to offer. In the end Korobov (29-2, 14 KOs) and Aleem (18-2-1, 11 KOs) had fought to a majority draw.
Fairfax, Virginia - Heating up gradually from round to round, the first televised fight of the night delivered quality middleweight action that peaked in the final round. Ultimately, an early lead for 36-year old Matt Korobov (29-2, 14 KO), 160 ¾, of Russia was too much for 25-year old Immanuwel Aleem (18-2, 11 KO), 159 ½, of Richmond, Virginia to overcome but he didn’t leave with a loss. An exciting second half of the contest resulted in a ten-round majority draw after initially being announced as a majority decision win for Korobov.

Jarrett Hurd didn’t have nearly as much difficulty cutting weight for his fight Saturday night as he did for his previous bout. The 6-feet-1 Hurd, the biggest champion in the 154-pound division, revealed Thursday night that he had to cut 36 pounds during fight week six months ago. Hurd still weighed in at 152 pounds, two below his division’s limit, for a fourth-round knockout of England’s Jason Welborn on December 2 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Matt Korobov believes he’ll get another title shot later this year. The Russian southpaw just doesn’t think Jermall Charlo will be the middleweight champion who’ll afford him that opportunity. Korobov is convinced Charlo learned during their December 22 bout that Korobov is too high-risk, low-reward to face again, even though their 12-round fight three months ago warrants a rematch.
Unified and undefeated IBF, IBO and WBA 154-pound "Swift'' Jarrett Hurd will defend his titles against top contender Julian "J-Rock'' Williams live in primetime in Premier Boxing Champions on FOX and FOX Deportes action on Saturday, May 11 at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia.
