Fletcher Confident He Will Down Martin Murray For Title

Garth Wood's loss has been Jarrod Fletcher's gain, with the accomplished Queensland boxer to fight Britain's Martin Murray for the regular World Boxing Association (WBA) middleweight world title in Monte Carlo in February. Wood was supposed to meet Murray for the WBA interim middleweight title in Sydney on December 11, but it was cancelled after the Anthony Mundine-Shane Mosley bout was rescheduled to just two weeks before that date.

Martin Murray edged past old rival Sergey Khomitsky at the ExCeL Arena in London before it was revealed he would fight for a world title in February. Murray produced a very flat performance against veteran Khomitsky, falling behind in the fight before establishing a lead after the halfway stage on an eight rounder. The fight had been postponed from three weeks ago when the St Helens middleweight was struck down with a virus, but he refused to blame the illness on a substandard performance.

Barker will make the first defence of his IBF middleweight belt against Sturm in Stuttgart this Saturday, live on Sky Sports. Murray is one of Barker's British rivals, but the St Helens man still has a lingering dislike of Sturm after he was held to draw by the German in 2011.

While Darren Barker is defending his IBF world middleweight title in Germany this weekend, and Matthew Macklin is in action in Atlantic City on Saturday, life is also busy for the two other elite-level British-based middles, Martin Murray and Andy Lee. Lee was last seen in action on the Froch/Groves undercard, and while it lasted, it was obvious that the Irishman is clearly heading in the right direction. Murray was supposed to be on that show, only to lose a points decision to a vicious virus. Instead, he will be back in the ring next weekend in London. Both have their sights trained on exciting opportunities in 2014. And both are also hoping for a Darren Barker victory in Stuttgart too.

Eddie Hearn of Matchroom has confirmed that Liverpool's Rocky Fielding will defend his Commonwealth Super middleweight title against Luke Blackledge at Manchester's Phones 4U Arena on Saturday night. The bout takes place on the undercard of Carl Froch versus George Groves and will be a welcome boost for Blackledge, who was pencilled in to meet Paul Smith for the British belt on December 7th and now gets his first major title crack a couple of weeks early.

Oleg Hermann, manager of WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (28-0, 25KOs), says British fighter Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11KOs) has refused to face his boxer. They wanted to fight Murray on February 1 at Salle des etoiles in Monte Carlo, but Hermann says Murray is refusing to accept the fight. The WBA placed Murray in line as the mandatory challenger to Golovkin. On Saturday, reports surfaced that Murray was going to face Golovkin on the February date. Murray later denied the reports, stating that he was scheduled to fight on the same show in separate bout, and looked forward to facing Golovkin in the near future.
