Undefeated WBA Super Lightweight Champion, Mario “El Azteca” Barrios (26-0, 17 KOs), has arrived in Hayward, California, to start training camp with coach Virgil Hunter.

Undefeated WBA Super Lightweight Champion, Mario “El Azteca” Barrios (26-0, 17 KOs), who is fresh of his impressive knockout victory over Ryan “Cowboy” Karl (18-3, 12 KOs), will be eyeing the winner of Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. (26-0, 21 KOs) vs Danny “Swift” Garcia (36-2, 21 KOs), as he contemplates making the move to welterweight.

SAN ANTONIO – Mario Barrios and Regis Prograis boxed in back-to-back bouts Saturday night at Alamodome. Now that they’ve recorded respective technical knockouts of Ryan Karl and Juan Heraldez, Barrios and Prograis could come face-to-face the next time they enter the ring. Both boxers acknowledged after their impressive victories that they expect to fight one another at some point.

SAN ANTONIO – Mario Barrios started slower than he would’ve liked Saturday night, but Barrios eventually delivered the knockout of Ryan Karl that he expected. Barrios knocked out Karl in the sixth round of their scheduled 12-round, 140-pound title fight on the Gervonta Davis-Leo Santa Cruz undercard at Alamodome, where his hometown fans cheered wildly. Referee Luis Pabon stopped their bout at 2:23 of the sixth round, once Barrios’ left hand sent a bloodied and battered Karl to the canvas.

SAN ANTONIO – The pressure, as far as Ryan Karl can tell, all lies on Mario Barrios. The 25-year-old Barrios is the fighter defending his title Saturday night at the same venue where he graduated from high school, before an adoring throng of his hometown fans. If Barrios beats Karl, he’ll become the first boxer from San Antonio to successfully defend a world title.

Mario Barrios blames no one but himself, but he is sure he knows why he faded during the second half of his controversial victory against Batyr Akhmedov. Barrios cut weight too late for that 12-round, 140-pound title fight in September 2019, which left the unbeaten Barrios fatigued when he most needed energy. Akhmedov came back and battered Barrios at times in the later rounds, yet Barrios scored his second knockdown of their fight during the 12th round, won a unanimous decision and captured the then-vacant WBA world super lightweight title on the Errol Spence Jr.-Shawn Porter undercard at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

SAN ANTONIO – Gervonta Davis looked relaxed before he stepped on the scale Friday afternoon. Davis and his entire team still collectively breathed a sigh of relief when it read 129.8 pounds. After months of speculation regarding Davis’ ability to make weight, the unbeaten Baltimore native officially came in slightly under the contracted maximum of 130 pounds for his 12-round fight against Leo Santa Cruz on Saturday night at Alamodome.

SAN ANTONIO – Travell Mazion had just knocked out his opponent in the first round at Alamodome on January 11. As Mazion made his way from the ring toward his dressing room, the unbeaten junior middleweight prospect spotted Mario Barrios. Mazion moved his way through the crowd to greet his friend.
