A lack of activity has always held Rashidi Ellis back from having more of a global fanbase. In 2019, 2020, and 2022, the now 30-year-old fought just once. In 2021, he failed to enter the ring at all.

Yordenis Ugas will get an opportunity to win a version of another welterweight title in his next fight. BoxingScene.com has learned that the WBC has ordered a bout between Ugas, a former WBA welterweight champ, and Mario Barrios for its interim 147-pound title. Ugas, who is ranked second among the WBC’s welterweight contenders, and the fifth-rated Barrios are expected to fight sometime in July in a bout Showtime likely would televise.

At one point, the career of Mario Barrios shone incandescently. But after brazenly attempting to turn back the challenge of Gervonta Davis in 2021, the 27-year-old was forced to hit the reset button. Although he experienced loads of success at 140 pounds, the San Antonio native believed that a move up in weight would afford his body a reprieve.

Earlier this month, Mario Barrios (27-2) put on one of the best performance of his career when he stopped Jovanie Santiago (14-3-1) in the 8th round of their welterweight showdown that served as the chief supporting bout underneath the Rey Vargas-O’Shaquie Foster main event.
